Age limits

Legal age (age of consent): 18 years

As it is in the most European countries at the age of 18 youngsters in Macedonia are considered an adults.

Drinking age: 18 years

There is a law in Macedonia for drinking age and also for it is prohibited for young people to by any kind of alcohol at the markets or at the bars.

Smoking age: 18 years

Regulated by law for prohibition for selling and smoking cigarettes for young people.

Discounts: 26 years

Generally you get discounts with a valid (international) student card on public transport, in museums etc. Mostly the age limit for students’ discounts is 26.

Marriage age: 18 years

If you are younger than 18 and you want to get marry, you have to take a special permission from your parents and to get a special document with their agreement. Only then you will be allowed to get married.

Criminal Responsibility: 14 / 18 years

Young people under 14 are excluded from criminal liability and cannot be prosecuted for whatever they might have done. Instead other measures are taken e.g. by the youth welfare office. Offenders aged 14 to 18 are dealt with in a special juvenile justice system.

Working age: 18 years

You must be 18 years old and have finished high school to be able to work.

Voting age: 18 years

Macedonian citizens can vote in public elections (local, regional and national) from the age of 18.

Renting a car: 21 years

For renting a car you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. An international driving license is not required.

Children must be at least 12 years of age to sit in the front of the vehicle unless a special secured seat is fitted.
