Macedonia has an improving standard of compulsory state funded health care, which is available free to all citizens and registered long-term residents. Private healthcare is also available in the country. The Ministry of Health oversees the health services and the Health Insurance Fund (HIF) collects the contributions, allocate funds, supervise and contract health care providers.
All citizens are entitled by law to equal access to health care.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Macedonia strongly recommends for visitors to obtain comprehensive travel insurance which will cover all overseas medical costs, including medical evacuation, before travelling to Macedonia.
You should check any exclusion, and that your policy covers you for all activities you want to undertake.
Travellers entering Macedonia may be asked to present proof of travel insurance at the border. The Macedonian authorities may refuse entry to travellers who fail to prove that they are insured.
