The official language in Republic of Macedonia is Macedonian. The Macedonian language belongs to the Eastern branch of the South Slavic language group.
In municipalities where ethnic groups are represented with over 20% of the total population, the language of that ethnic group is co-official, for example Albanian or Serbian.
Macedonian is written in Cyrillic script. The Macedonian standard alphabet consists of 31 letters and was adopted after the Second World War.
